Champs and Chumps

Some random notes and thoughts as the month of April comes to an end with the hope that May will finally feel like spring.

Like just about everyone else I laud NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for his swift and decisive punishment of Clippers owner Donald Sterling for the racist comments he made which became public last weekend.

For now Sterling is banned for life from involvement with the team and league and the other 29 NBA owners are expected to vote unanimously to force him to sell the franchise, which is said to be worth in excess of $500 million.  Silver, who only became commissioner three months ago, spoke with players before handing down his decision and we now know that a boycott of last night’s playoff games was a possibility if he did not come down hard on Sterling.

There is much being said and written about the NBA ignoring Sterling’s past discriminatory practices and how the league should have taken action sooner.  Just my take but I think that’s like questioning a coach’s decision after a game.  Fact is that while he’s not a nice guy and clearly a bad owner the league probably did not have any legal grounds to punish him in the past.

The inaugural John M. Hoffman Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, June 19 at Gambler Ridge Golf Club in Cream Ridge with all proceeds to benefit a scholarship fund.  Hoffman died four years ago from brain cancer at the age of 27 not long after joining a local law firm as an associate.

An outstanding swimmer at both Monsignor Donovan High School and Bucknell University he would later coach competitive swim teams in Toms River.  The John M. Hoffman Foundation was established shortly after his death and the scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior from an Ocean County high school who was a member of his or her swim team.  For information on the golf outing or the foundation you can call (732) 232-7945.
