Every week and just about every day some profession is being honored although frankly there is no “Radio Broadcasters Appreciation Week.”  However this is Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week and I can’t think of two more deserving groups to be saluted.  Having been in the hospital recently I know its nurses who do much of the heavy lifting despite some incredible challenges.

Teachers of course are in the unique position of making a difference in the lives of our children and most take that responsibility very seriously.  So if there is a teacher and/or nurse that you appreciate this is the week to thank them.

There are now four Shore Conference schools searching for head football coaches with the latest being Manchester Township.  Gerard O’Donnell told me yesterday he will not re-apply for the position and has decided to step down following 7 seasons as the Hawks head coach.  The best of those was 2010 when Manchester went 6-4 and qualified for the state playoffs for just the second time in school history.

O’Donnell is the current president of the Shore Football Coaches Foundation and very active with the US Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic which will be played on July 17th at Brick Township High School.  A math teacher at Manchester, O’Donnell has a son who plays football at Monsignor Donovan High School. Wall, Neptune and Keyport also have coaching vacancies.

Speaking of coaching openings.  Ocean County College is looking for both a head coach and assistant coach for their women’s basketball program.  Those interested can contact the OCC Athletic Department.

There will not be a Hometown View tomorrow because I’ll be heading up to Penn State University as my daughter Alex graduates on Saturday.  You will of course hear about that next week.

Just want to take a moment for an early Mother’s Day wish to the backbone of the American family.  Its mothers in most cases who make it all happen and a day is not nearly enough to honor them.  If you're lucky like me you have a Mother and a Mother-in-Law still in your life and don’t take that for granted.
