The sound of breaking glass in the middle of the night alerts a Howell Township neighborhood and brings police face to face with a burglary suspect from Keansburg. Investigators are now trying to determine if it's the tip of a much bigger iceberg.

Jordan M. Raymond, 25, faces three counts each of burglary and criminal mischief, and one theft charge, after the confrontation with township police long before dawn Wednesday.

Police said calls began streaming in from homes around Scenic and Long Road at about 2:30 AM, describing a man creating a disturbance and possibly breaking windows.

Responding officers said they found Raymond walking in the vicinity, taking note of bulging pockets. Inside, police said, were jewelry, a cell phone, camera, bank cards and loose change.

Raymond claimed to have just left a home on Long Road, police said, but the resident inside refuted the story.

Officers found three more homes in the area with damaged windows or glass sliding doors.

Raymond was placed in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold, with bail set at $177,500.

Police are probing whether the resemblances between the Wednesday break-ins and last week's at the church on Scenic and Strickland mean more, unreported episodes.
