Brick Township sets up safe zone for online deals

Online buyers and sellers, who need a place to complete the deals in-person, now have one in Brick Township, well-lit, fully monitored, free of charge, and right next to police headquarters.

The Safe Exchange Zone, two dedicated parking spots offers a place for social media- and web-based transactions to be conducted under a measure of security and safety.

Mayor John Ducey said that a sharp upswing in such sales and swaps, and the increased risks of victimization, precipitated the move.

"We certainly encourage anyone who has concerns to err on the side of caution and safety and use the Safe Exchange Zone," Ducey said in prepared remarks.

Police won't be on site, but they are adjacent to the spot, and there's a camera lens focused on it 24 hours a day, officials said, adding a list of precautions.

• Let a friend or family member know about the exchange.
• Know who you are dealing with: Check with a consumer protection agency such as the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, or through online feedback if EBay or Amazon is your source. Get a phone number and physical mailing address.
• Try to complete all transactions during daylight hours if possible.
• Never invite strangers to your home or agree to meet at their home.
• Do not agree to a transaction if the other party refuses to meet in the Safe Exchange Zone.
• Police Department or Township employees will not act as a witness or be part of these transactions.
• Bring a cell phone in case of an emergency.
