Michael Vence, 40, was booked Tuesday in connection with the July 14 incident near the Mansion nightclub in the township. The probe has led investigators to suspect that Vence ran an unauthorized taxi service for Mansion patrons.

Authorities believe that Vence, in a car the night of July 14 near the club, flashed what appeared to be a law enforcement badge, ordered a driver on Cedarbridge Avenue to pull to the roadside, ordered hm out of the car, took $5,000 from him and fled.

Vence was tipped off that police wanted to speak with him about the incident, authorities said. He was charged Tuesday in impersonating a police officer and theft, and was released to await a court date after paying $20,000 full bail, police said.

Information gathered in the course of the investigation has led to the suspicion that Vence ran an authorized taxi service for Mansion patrons, possibly under an alias.

Detective Daniel Waleski is leading the probe. If you recognize Vence by the photo, Walseki would like to speak with you. He can be reached at 732-262-1170.
