Folks living near Herbertsville Park in Brick Township who have seen stepped-up police patrols in the past several weeks, can expect to keep seeing them - and on two wheels, not just on four wheels.

Beginning April 30, nine officers who have just wrapped up bicycle training start patrolling the Maple Leaf Gardens complex on Herbertsville Road, and more are expected to undertake bike training, police said.

The Maple Leaf complex has been the center of a special detail during the past two weekends. by order of Chief James Riccio. Officers were instructed to maintain high visibility and to engage citizens to hear their quality-of-life concerns.

The details resulted in dialogue with more than 90 residents, police said. Moreover, there were nine arrests on charges including driving under the influence (DUI), narcotics and warrants, five impounded cars and 72 summonses.

The park has been the site of several recent disturbances, including an April 18 melee among four teen girls that left one of them hospitalized.
