A little of this and a little of that heading into the final full weekend of summer:

  • The BlueClaws fell to visiting Lexington 6-3 in game three of the South Atlantic League Championship Series Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park. The visiting Legends lead the best-of-5 series 2-1 and can clinch the title tonight in Lakewood.
The BlueClaws do have Spencer Howard on the mound and in his last start he threw a no-hitter to send the BlueClaws into the finals.  If they win tonight there will be a fifth and deciding game Saturday night at FirstEnergy Park.
  • It was sure nice to see Todd Frazier hit a walk-off home run Thursday in the opener of a doubleheader that the Mets would sweep against the visiting Miami Marlins.  As frustrating as this season has been both the “Toddfather” and the Mets are finishing on a bit of a high note.Despite missing almost two months with injuries the 32-year old Frazier is second on the team with 18 home runs and 58 RBI’s and the Mets are 9-3 in the month of September.
  • Turning to high school football the “Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week” on 92.7 WOBM finds us at Jackson Memorial tonight where the Jaguars host Wall in a meeting of teams who posted shutout victories in their season openers.  Kickoff is at 7pm and you can watch the game on shoresportsnetwork.com.

Also tonight Brick visits St. John Vianney looking to avenge last year’s 42-0 loss to the Lancers.  Things have changed for the worse for Vianney as they have lost their first two games by a combined score of 84-20 and have been plagued by off the field issues as well.

  • A couple of college football notes with local connections.  Former Vianney quarterback Anthony Brown threw 5 touchdown passes for Boston College last night as they outscored Wake Forest 41-34.  The sophomore has thrown 9 touchdowns with no interceptions for BC who is off to a 3-0 start.
  • Top-ranked Alabama visits Ole Miss tomorrow night and will face a Rebels team that has scored 123 points in their first two games.  I mention this because the offensive coordinator is Phil Longo, who played at Central Regional in the mid 80’s and later Rowan University.  Longo was a successful head coach at Parsippany Hills in New Jersey before moving into the college ranks where he has made several stops before landing in Oxford, Mississippi.
