TRENTON — The "flash freeze" of Tuesday's rain, snow and slush into ice slowed the morning commute on Wednesday as thousands remain without power.

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams after his own early morning drive advised to leave extra time. "Road conditions vary throughout the state. Overnight re-freezing made for dangerous travel especially on entrance and exit ramps and at intersections. Areas north of Route 78 were by far the most difficult along with sections of Mercer County," said Wiilliams, adding that snow piled at intersections will block the line of sight.

Many school districts throughout the state have a delayed start to allow students and extra staff to make it in. Others canceled classes for second straight day.

"We actually have a Winter Weather Advisory until 8 p.m. for Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties. Not because anything is falling from the sky, but because blowing and drifting snow may make for a wintry morning with reduced visibility," Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said.

Other lingering issues from Tuesday's storm include continued power outages and public transportation.

POWER

Over 5,200 PSE&G and Atlantic City Electric customers remain without power as of 6 a.m. according to their respective outage maps while JCP&L only has a handful of customers without power.

Both companies brought in additional crews from their sister utilities. "The area sustained damage from ice that took down trees and wires," spokeswoman Karen Johnson said in a statement. "The utility’s own workforce is receiving assistance from 150 mutual aid linemen who will focus on the hardest hit southern counties. Crews worked through the night to remove trees and repair the storm damage."

ACE spokesman said to immediately report a live wire to police and not to touch it. "We urge customers to stay clear of wires hanging loose from poles or lying on the ground,” Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric region president said.

 NJ TRANSIT & AMTRAK

  • NJ Transit bus service back on a full schedule but icy roads could cause delays on routes north of Route 195. Light rail is also on a regular schedule
  • NJ Transit rail is on a President's Day schedule.  Trains do not stop at Jersey Ave on the Northeast Corridor,  between Raritan & High Bridge on the Raritan Valley line or to Lake Hopatcong & Hackettstown on the Montclair-Boonton line. The Atlantic City line is on a normal schedule
  • Cross honoring in effect between NJ Transit rail, light rail, bus and PATH
  •  Amtrak's Acela Express and Northeast Regional service will operated a modified schedule between Washington, New York City and Boston, with some trains truncated or cancelled.
