One half of the most successful brother-brother coaching duo the Shore Conference has ever known is calling it a career.  Toms River East baseball coach Bill Frank knew all along this would be his final season and he made that official over the weekend.  Frank just finished his 30th season with the Raiders, a season in which they went 17-8 and tied Jackson Memorial for the Class A South title, the ninth division title during his tenure.

His career record of 520-279-2 included eight Ocean County Tournament championships, four state sectional crowns and the Group 4 state title in 2001.  The 62-year old leaves as the third winningest coach in shore history behind only his older brother Ken and CBA’s Marty Kenney.

Ken Frank’s 806 wins are the most in state history and after 37 seasons at Toms River South he shows no signs of letting up.  When both teams were at their best the East-South games, especially at night were truly something special.  Always felt bad for Mr. and Mrs. Frank, who in truth wished the games could have ended in ties.

Plans are being made for another 4th of July Fireworks spectacular in Beachwood. The Fireworks Committee met recently to finalize everything for the 74th annual extravaganza on the Toms River which is viewed by tens of thousands on land and in the water.

While most towns have stopped the holiday fireworks tradition it continues in Beachwood because of support from donations and sponsors, among them WOBM and Comcast.  As I do each year I encourage those planning on attending to help continue the tradition by making a donation to “Fireworks on the River” which can be sent to Beachwood Borough Hall at 1600 Pinewald Road.

A reminder about tomorrow night’s 9th annual Red, White and Brew “Kick Off the Summer” Wine Tasting Event at the Toms River Country Club on Washington Street.  It’s all for the benefit of the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center at Community Medical Center. The event runs from 5:30-8:30 on what should be a perfect night to kickoff the summer and help a great cause.  For ticket information call the Community Medical Center Foundation at (732) 557-8131.
