So Friday night as promised I slipped in under the cover of darkness (much like Batman) into my local theater. Armed with coffee, snowcaps and peanut m&m's! It was the late night showing of Warner Brothers "Batman vs. Superman". Going in I realize a few things...

  • I know most "critics" hate "superhero" films as they are almost below them in storyline, whatever!
  • I prefer individual storylines and this movie is a direct set up for the "Justice League" movie and has multiple heroes all piled in together (Batman, Superman & Wonderwoman)
  • We have to get used to Ben Affleck as Batman.

Ok all this said I enjoyed the movie. It was what it was, a way to set the stage for the "Justice League" movie. Like the Avengers, I prefer the characters in their own movies, but to keep up with the Jones' DC Comics is almost forced to do the "League".

I liked the way director Zach Snyder showed the contrast in the characters. Superman almost God-like and here to rescue those who need help, where Batman is here to battle evil and do whatever is needed to destroy crime - yes a total vigilante! There was a lot to do in this movie so it did jump, but it had to. I like that the entire cast from "Man of Steel" was back (Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Lawrence Fishburne) including a cameo from Kevin Costner!  Ben Affleck, I thought, did a good job as Bruce Wayne, and Jeremy Irons as a suitable "Alfred". Jesse Eisenberg played a psychotic Lex Luthor.

The problem with the movie: a lot to cover in one movie, but I enjoyed the night at the movies. Remember this is a comic book fantasy, so don't overthink it, just enjoy Batman smashing some serious heads and taking care of business without trying to be politically correct. After all do criminals deserve "PC" treatment? I think not.

FYI 'Batman vs Superman" also smashed the box office for "Pre-Summer" opening bringing nearly $170 million dollars! Holy payday Batman!

The second movie I saw this weekend was "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" which Nia Vardalos wrote and was produced by Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (who also appears in the movie as John Stamos' wife).

My wife and I made the night into a themed event: our "Big Fat Greek Date" combining a fantastic Greek dinner with the movie, so it was moussaka and popcorn!  We first went to dinner, all Greek, and then capped it off with "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2"! This theme night thing may be the first of more ......

The entire cast is back as the movie returns years later and now Vardalos and John Corbett's daughter "Paris" is 17 and soon to move away to college. The movie deals with coming of age, rekindling romance and the power of family. This movie was a perfect sequel! It was great. Throughout the theater there was laughter and tears.  If you're looking for a "feel good" movie, this is it. Andrea Martin steals the movie as Aunt Voula and even though she does not say a lot, Grandma gets some big laughs!

Films like this won't win Oscars, but they will make you smile! Go see it and OPA!
