Stafford police said the accident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. in front of Southern Regional High School.

60-year-old Richard E. Smrkovsky, a resident of the Manahawkin section of town, was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center for treatment.

It's unknown what caused the driver, 51-year-old Jonathan M. Tedesco of Manahawkin, to veer off the road. He was not injured, but his 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene, according to police.

Tedesco was charged with careless driving and failure to maintain a lane.

Traffic was redirected temporarily from Route 9 to Bridge Road while workers from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and Verizon replaced the utility pole.
