We are heading into what is the next-to-last weekend of the summer season for many and it’s simply hard to imagine it’s almost over.

Signs of the end are everywhere as parents are taking their children back to college, high school and youth sports teams are practicing for the fall season and darkness comes earlier and earlier each evening.  I find it all rather depressing with the only consolation being September and football season is almost here.  That groan I heard are wives who know that means little if anything will get done on the weekends.

Just a couple of months after they graduated high school it appears that a pair of former Shore Conference football standouts will get a chance to make an immediate impact on the Penn State football team.  Manahawkin’s Mike Gesicki and Saeed Blacknall of Manalapan were two of the three true freshman who coach James Franklin said would likely play a role on the offense this season and not redshirt.

Gesicki, who had a celebrated three-sport career at Southern Regional, has had an impressive summer camp and drawn rave reviews from some of his teammates.  Both players will travel to Ireland next week as Penn State prepares for its season opener against Central Florida in Dublin.

Meanwhile former Southern Regional and Penn State standout Glenn Carson is trying to earn a spot on the Arizona Cardinals roster.  The undrafted rookie linebacker has played in the Cardinals first two pre-season games, making a total of three tackles.  I was told by a reporter who follows the team that making the regular roster might be a bit of a long shot but Carson does have a good chance of earning a spot on the practice squad which this week the NFL expanded from 8 to 10 players.

Players on the practice squad are not eligible to play in games but practice with the team and earn a minimum of $6,000 a week.

Former Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens showed up at Middletown South’s high school football practice on Thursday.  The ex-49er, Eagle and Cowboy (among others) was reportedly there to shoot some footage for a reality show pilot on the E Network.  “TO” posed for a picture with Middletown South Athletic Trainer Stacy White, who just happened to be wearing a Cowboys tee-shirt.  You can see the picture on shoresportsnetwork, com
