Beach Sweeps Cleans Up Amusement Park Debris, Unexploded Device

 

Amusement park debris spawned by Superstorm Sandy and an explosive device were among the many items uncovered during an environmental group’s annual sweep of New Jersey’s 127 miles of beaches.

“This is the first event where we will be collecting data from clean-up activities since Superstorm Sandy, said Clean Ocean Action Executive Director Cindy Zipf. “

Thousands of volunteers took part Saturday in the cleanups organized by Clean Ocean Action, which has been doing beach sweeps for 25 years.

An unexploded device was found Raritan Bay Waterfront Park in South Amboy. The state police bomb squad unit and other law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, and no injuries were reported.

A Potpourri Of Debris

In Seaside Park, volunteers found stuffed animals from boardwalk attractions, along with debris from the log flume ride. Medical waste was found in Keansburg, while a computer hard drive, fake flowers, a boogie board and a welcome mat were among the items found in Wildwood.

A record number of volunteers at Atlantic Highlands filled over 3 dumpsters full of debris  according to Clean Ocean Action, which reports over 720 volunteers found a backpack full of personal belongings and enough lumber and debris to over fill the dumpster.

In Belmar, volunteers found tiles from the old public restrooms of the Belmar boardwalk while a lot of medical waster was discovered in Keansburg.
