Superstorm Sandy knocked the elementary school out of operation in October, forcing students to learn in temporary locations for the remainder of the school year.

Nearly $2 million in renovations have been completed since the storm, letting children return to a school they are familiar with. Renovations included a resurfaced gym floor, an updated electrical system, new bathrooms, and new flooring in all classrooms.

"The reopening today is really a testament of the dedication and the commitment of the teachers here, the administrators, the community members and, of course, the parents," Christie told a crowd of reporters and Beach Haven residents.

Over the next week, four of the last five schools damaged by Sandy will reopen. The Long Beach Island Grade School has an anticipated opening of March 2014.

Sandy caused more than $40 million in damage to schools. Within three weeks of the storm, 99 percent of New Jersey's schools were back in business.
