Throughout the country, the American Cancer Society holds Relay for Life events every year. Barnegat High School is hosting their local relay this weekend, and it'll mean even more this year.

As we told you about a few weeks ago, Barnegat recently lost one of their most inspirational residents, 12 year old Kyle McGetrick. One of Kyle's goals was to raise at least $1000 for the Relay this weekend. Since his passing on May 1st, township residents have rallied together in memory of Kyle, organizing a candle light vigil a few weeks ago, and holding a fundraising concert at Barnegat High School last night.

I'm happy to report that the "Courage for Kyle" Relay team has raised over $4,000 so far, with Kyle's individual page well surpassing his $1,000 goal.

Personally I'd like to send my best wishes to Kyle's family and friends. Being a participant in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides walk in memory of my friend Kevin Collins this weekend, and having done so since Kevin's passing in 2008, I know first hand that these events are a roller coaster of emotions, but in the end we can all take pride in supporting very important causes and remembering people who brought families, friends, and communities together - an astounding quality that both Kyle and Kevin shared.
