A new career in law enforcement awaits a select number of applicants in Barnegat Township. Police are accepting applications as they establish a hiring list for patrol officer openings.

Information from the department follows:

In order to be hired, the applicant must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of New Jersey and meet all qualifications as stipulated herein and in New Jersey State Statutes. Sworn employees must maintain residency in the State of New Jersey during their employment with the agency. Any sworn employee who moves his/her primary place of residence outside of New Jersey shall be subject to dismissal.

Applicants must have 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses. Applicants must be appointed on or before their 35th birthday. There are exceptions to the age requirement for former military personnel who served in an area of conflict as well as certain former law enforcement officers. In order to meet the eligibility requirements, candidates must either have (1) a bachelor's degree signifying completion of the undergraduate curriculum and graduation from an accredited college or university, OR (2) an associate's degree OR have completed 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, plus at least two years of satisfactory employment, OR (3) have completed 30 college credits from an accredited college or university plus at least two years of active military service with an honorable discharge.

The selection process will consist of a written test, physical fitness test, and oral interview. Candidates who successfully complete those portions of the selection process and are being considered for employment will undergo medical and psychological evaluation as well as a thorough background check prior to being offered employment.

Completed applications must be returned in person to police headquarters (900 West Bay Avenue Barnegat, NJ) along with a money order (no checks or cash) for $75 payable to NJSACOP beginning at 8:00am on Monday, September 7, 2015 and no later than 4:00 pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2015.

Upon returning the completed application and money order, applicants will receive a study guide and information sheet with specifics regarding the test location and time.
