A Barnegat man is airlifted to Atlanticare Medical Center following a late Wednesday morning crash on Route 9 in Stafford Township. Police say 54-year-old Steven Shapiro of Tuckerton was traveling northbound on route 9 in a Ford Econline van when he slammed into a Chevy SUV being operated by 20-year-old Harry Shenfield of Barnegat who was attempting to make a left onto Hilliard Boulevard, sending into a signpost in front of Mike's Auto Repair.

Police say the SUV's front seat passenger, 21-year-old Leteaf Smith of Barnegat, was airlifted with multiple leg fractures and other injuries after being extracted from the vehicle. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Stafford Township and Barnegat Township Volunteer Fire Companies extricated Smith from the vehicle while members of the Stafford Township EMS and MonOc Paramedics tended to Smith's injuries.

No summonses have been issued pending further investigation.
