Author Gary Jobson said just weeks before World War I in 1914, Barnegat Bay organized races at yacht clubs that existed during that time. "It's very impressive that they had the foresight and more impressive that it sustained itself in a vibrant way all these years," he said.

Jobson's book and documentary "Chasing Roosters" about the centennial will debut at Saturday's celebration. "It's playfully named 'Chasing Roosters' because in 1914 the first winner of the first race on Barnegat Bay to have a flag with a white rooster. That tradition is continued every Saturday through the summer, hence 'Chasing Roosters.' Everybody wants to get that flag and be the winner of the week." Jobson said.

The great thing about sailing Jobson noted is it provides a connection to the environment, teaches teamwork and leadership skills, and connects generations. "Through our lifetimes we really get to know five generations and no other sport brings everybody together at the same time regardless of your age."

Jobson said all of the 13 yacht clubs on Barnegat Bay offer junior sailing and along the way there's also adult education to bring people into the sport. He started sailing at age six at the Beachwood Yacht Club.

Saturday's BBYRA celebration is sold out.
