They are high school valedictorians, salutatorians, class presidents, Boys and Girls State delegates, honored athletes including a state wrestling champion, accomplished members of bands, orchestras and theatre groups, volunteers for civic organizations, leaders in their schools and more.

After graduation this month they will be attending schools like Columbia, Clemson, Penn State, Rutgers, Monmouth, Richmond, Emory-Riddle Aeronautical, The US Naval Academy, the US Air Force Academy and many others.

They are the 38 high school seniors who during the course of the school year were honored as WOBM/Gateway Toyota Students of the Week.  For the twenty-second consecutive year the Toms River auto dealership and 92.7 WOBM recognized two seniors from each Ocean County school, including those from the MATES and Performing Arts Academies of the county vocational school district.

Starting back in September and ending just last week we saluted one student each week with an on-air tribute as part of a Gateway Toyota commercial.  The weekly honorees, who are selected by their schools, were also highlighted on wobm.com and received a framed certificate from us.

When I first came up with the idea to do this in 1995 I went to Gateway Toyota to see if they would be interested in partnering with us to help promote the very best our schools have to offer.  They said “yes” then and have done so every year since and are already committed to returning for a 23rd season beginning in the fall.

They also said yes to the idea of awarding a scholarship to one of the weekly winners and this morning General Manager Rick Cardwell randomly selected Elizabeth Schreier  of Lacey Township High School to receive $1000: $500 from Gateway and $500 from WOBM to help with her college expenses.

For a look at all of this year’s weekly winners go to wobm.com and under the “Features” tab you will find the 38 terrific young women and men who best represent not only their schools but families and communities as well.
