A Lakehurst driver wanted in connection with a hit-and-and run and the attempted murder of a Seaside Heights Police Officer who witnessed the crash has been arrested at his home without incident, according News 12 New Jersey.

54-year-old Robert Dechert was picked up by Manchester and Lakehurst police yesterday, one day after the accident on Route 37 in Toms River Sunday night.

Dechert crashed his 2014 Kia into a 2002 Chevy around 9:30 p.m., then fled the scene, according to Toms River Police. A bumper and license plate left behind helped authorities identify him.

Authorities said the crash was witnessed by uniformed off duty Seaside Heights Police Officer, Erik Hershey, who followed Dechert's vehicle to Aqua Blu restaurant on Route 37 where it parked.  Dechert is accused speeding directly at Hershey as he approached the vehicle in an attempt to strike the officer.  Hershey jumped out of the way and avoided being struck as the Kia fled the wrong way on Route 37 against traffic.

Dechert was positively identified as the driver and a warrant was issued for his arrest.  He is charged with Attempted Murder by means of a Motor Vehicle and numerous motor vehicle violations.  Bail is set at $500,000.

Anyone with information should call Traffic Officer Mark Nater at 732-349-0150.
