Today, the Assembly Education Committee unanimously cleared a teacher tenure reform bill that is sponsored by the panel’s chairman Assemblyman Pat Diegnan. Since mid-November of last year, Governor Chris Christie has been calling for education reform in New Jersey. On his ‘to-do’ list is changing the rules governing how a teacher achieves tenure.
Contrary to popular opinion, the people of New Jersey are more ethical than you might think at least when compared to people in most of the countries in Europe. In the latest survey Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, New Jerseyans were asked the same series of questions used by the European Social Survey (ESS) to measure ethics, and the Garden State scored better than all but two of the 26 countries polled.
The deadline for a signed and balanced State Budget in New Jersey is midnight June 30th. Consensus on three competing tax cut plans is paramount to meeting that deadline. Yesterday, Governor Chris Christie all but confirmed that he supports the tax cut plan being put forth by State Senate President Steve Sweeney.
Late last month, Dr. David Rosen, the lead budget analyst with the non-partisan Office of Legislative Services (OLS) estimated that over the next 14 months state revenues will lag $1.3 billion behind Governor Chris Christie’s projections. Christie expects the budget gap to be about $676 million. Yesterday, Rosen was out with more bad news. According to OLS, tax collections for May are $50 to $100 million below last month’s dismal projections.
