Lakim Cohen was arrested Monday following an investigation that began November 16 when the four-month old was hospitalized, according to information from Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato. He was given no option for release from incarceration on payment of 10 percent.

Information from the Prosecutor's office did not clarify Cohen's relationship to the infant, did not identify the mother or other relatives or their whereabouts, and did not indicate who brought the baby to hospitalization.

The infant was examined at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune on November 16. The medical report released two days later revealed a depressed skull fracture and three broken bones in one arm, authorities said.

The report concluded that the injuries stemmed from blunt force trauma and were consistent with child abuse, investigators said.

Cohen was charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was placed in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River. Authorities ordered no contact with the victim and are keeping the New Jersey Division of Child Protective Services apprised of the case.
