“Ask The Governor” Leads To Monroe Township Tax Relief [AUDIO]

So far there’s no comment from local officials in Monroe Township, after they were ordered to lower property taxes by half a million dollars, effective this coming November.

Last month, during the “Ask The Governor” program, several callers complained to Governor Christie about a big spike in property taxes, and the Governor ordered an investigation.

Yesterday, Christie called the station and announced the Department of Community Affairs had determined Monroe had exceeded the state’s 2 percent property tax cap, and taxes had to be lowered by 500 thousand dollars.

As you might imagine, Monroe Township residents were thrilled.

“That would be great,” said one shopper, “I’m sure that would benefit a lot of the residents here – it’s very good news.”

“I think it was high enough as it was,” said a man standing nearby. “So yeah, they should lower it from what it was before that…The decrease is good news – it would be great if they lowered it from what it was before …I hope it works because our taxes are ridiculously high.”

Another shopper chimed in, “I think that’s great, I think that’s better for everybody, because it puts more money back into the consumers pockets…One of the biggest problems we have in this country is taxes are too high.”

One woman said she was stunned to learn her taxes would be going down.

“I love where I live, I’d never leave it,” she said, “But these are definitely perks that I could – it just makes me feel better, you know- I just thought I was going to go in and buy chicken and ha ha ha, it made the day a lot better!”

Repeated calls to the Mayor and Township Council members  seeking comment were ignored.

The next “Ask The Governor” program is Thursday, September 27 at 7:00 PM.
