While Thursday’s high temperatures will be a bit cooler than Wednesday’s, we should still squeeze out one more pleasant spring day before April showers return to the forecast.

Here are your weather headlines for Thursday, April 16, 2015...

Nice Thursday

No big weather concerns for today! We’ll see some sun and some clouds today, with a comfortably cool morning and a nice mild afternoon (although not quite as warm as yesterday). Winds will shift from northeastly this morning to southeasterly this afternoon. So, with the breeze coming off the ocean all day, I expect coastal locations to be held a bit cooler than the rest of the state today. Highs should reach the mid 60s for most of the state, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jersey Shore is held to the 50s.

Not-So-Nice Friday

Believe it or not, April's rainfall has been way below average across the entire state. For example, normal month-to-date precipitation in Newark is 2.20”, but we’ve only seen 0.39” so far this month. That was a significant factor in Wednesday’s high fire danger for the northern half of New Jersey.

So maybe we should think of Friday’s rain as a good thing... especially since the raindrops should end well before the weekend arrives. My estimate of timing for the rain would be about 5 a.m. through 2 p.m. tomorrow. On the whole, it will be mostly light, showery type rain. But there could be a few pockets of heavy rain and a few rumbles of thunder, especially around the late morning hours.

Skies may very well start to clear late Friday afternoon, helping to bump high temperatures into the upper 60s. And again, the end of this band of rain will set us up for a potentially stellar weekend...

Another Wonderful Weather Weekend?

As we get warmer this spring and summer, there’s really nothing better than a weekend with great weather. Mother Nature will mostly deliver on that wonderful weekend this time around.

On Saturday, we’ll have a brisk west wind (up to about 20 mph) and abundant sunshine. That will fuel a nice warmup into the 70s statewide. There could be a few clouds creeping into the sky by the end of the day, and that wind could be a bit annoying at times. But again... 70s... No complaints allowed.

The forecast for Sunday gets a bit more complicated. Once again, that northeast-southeast breeze sets up. And clouds will thicken up throughout the day on Sunday too. So we’re looking a bit cooler, although still near normal in the 60° to 65° range. By late Sunday (currently looks like Sunday evening), we’ll have to add a chance for a rain shower to the forecast too. That will lead into an extended period of steady rain for Monday through early Tuesday morning.
