As you've heard on 92.7 WOBM and read here at WOBM.com over the past few weeks, Ocean County has been getting ready to mark a major milestone in history. Not only Ocean County history, but world history.

This past Sunday I had the honor of attending the memorial service to mark 75 years since the Hindenburg disaster at the Lakehurst branch of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society has worked tirelessly to keep the memory of this milestone event alive, and they presented a tasteful, solemn, and interesting event. The featured speakers were the last known surviving member of the ground crew from that fateful day, and a German man who had taken rides on the airship as a boy.

Wreaths were presented, Taps was played, and the large crowd observed a silence to memorialize those who were lost on that day that brought a small piece of Ocean County to the world.
