NEW YORK — Amtrak will continue its rehabilitation of New York Penn Station this winter, requiring some adjustments to NJ Transit's schedule.

The work will begin on Thursday, Jan. 4 and continue through Monday, May 28 in the area of Track 15 and Track 18, which will require concrete to be demolished and the replacement of steel hardware. The work is similar to that done around Track 10 last summer.

Work will also be done on the "C" interlocking at the east end of the station, which directs Amtrak and Long Island Railroad trains east and to the Sunnyside Yard. NJ Transit trains use the yard to reverse direction.

Most of the work will be done on the weekend but there will be some single-track closures on weekdays that Amtak expects to affect NJ Transit, LIRR and Amtrak service.

NJ Transit said it an email it would "soon announce service schedule adjustments that will minimize the impact to all of our customers to the greatest extent as possible."

“After a successful summer, it is essential that we continue to upgrade the infrastructure so that we can continue to improve the reliability of service for all the customers that use New York Penn Station,” Amtrak co-CEO Wick Moorman said in a statement. The summer work cost nearly $30 million.

The summer work had the biggest impact on NJ Transit's Morris & Essex Line, with most inbound weekday service ending at Hoboken Terminal with cross-honoring with NJ Transit buses, PATH and NY Waterway to continue the trip into Manhattan. Ticket prices were also reduced for the summer on the line and service ran smoothly for most of the summer.
