The U.S. Census Bureau reports that just after 2:29 PM, the nation’s population reached 314,159,265, or pi (3.14159265) times 100 million.

Pi is the mathematical constant for the ratio of a circle’s circumference (distance around) to its diameter (distance across).

“This is a once in many generations even,” said Census Bureau Chief Demographer Howard Hogan, “so go out and celebrate this American pi.”

How much has it grown since then? Check out the U.S. and world population clocks at http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html.
