On this special, Sunday night, post-NFC championship game edition of ‘American Idol,’ the producers hit San Diego, the So Cal city where the whether is always nice, to mine some talent. The auditions took place on the USS Midway, which was loud, but there was a crop of quality wannabes that got golden tickets to the next round. Here’s PopCrush’s recap of the hot happenings.

Jennifer Diley: This patriot wore a red and white striped bikini top and dental floss-sized Daisy Dukes. She tried to sing Jessica Simpson‘s ‘With You’ and Mariah Carey‘s ‘Hero,’ but she couldn’t carry a tune. Rad body, though.

Ashley Robles: She hit the high notes with Whitney Houston‘s ‘I Will Always Love You.’ She has a daughter, 5, who wants to be her back up dancer. It’s all in the ‘Idol’ family.

Jayrah Gibson: He sang Musiq Soulchild’s ‘Just Friends‘ with cool, hip and marketable R&B mashed with hip-hop swagger and style. He’s ready to make records … Now!

Aubree Dieckmeyer: She has a sweet, but limited voice, as demonstrated by her performance of ‘Feeling’ Good.’ She needs some work, but has oodles of promise, so we’ll see her again.

Ali Shields: Ali wanted to meet former ‘Idol’ judge Ellen DeGeneres, so she wrote a song about it and got her wish. Shields was full of almost too much perkiness and tried a B-Girl rap, but it was so bad it was bad. Then she sang Corinne Bailey Rae’s ‘Like a Star,’ proving she can sing a little. Her personality got her upstreamed.

Kyle Crews: The frat boy college student had us thinking he’d be a bust with all the talk about being a ladies man and how he likes J. Lo‘s voluptuous lips. Then he sang Monica’s ‘Angel of Mine‘ and put all the naysayin’ to rest. He had the best male voice we’ve heard thus far.

Jane Carrey: Actor/comedian Jim Carrey’s daughter can sing, but needs to work on her performance elements, like opening eyes. We all want to see and hear more.

Jason “Wolf ” Hamlin: He sang Credence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Midnight Special’ and then Johnny Cash’s ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and got sent to the next round, thanks to his rebellious rock style.

See ya Wednesday when ‘Idol’ is back on at 8PM ET on FOX.
