If you are heading to Newark Liberty International Airport in the coming weeks, and you use the AirTrain service, you may want to give yourself some extra time. Starting Thursday, AirTrain Newark will be suspended for about 75 days for critical repair work.

While the AirTrain service that links New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains along the Northeast Corridor to the airport is suspended, shuttle bus service will be provided from Newark Penn Station.

"Up to 60 buses will be running at a given time to supplement the service," said Huntley Lawrence, deputy director in the Aviation Department with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. "We will also have additional signage and about 85 more customer care representatives to assist passengers."

During the closure, the shuttle buses will provide service between terminals, lots P2 and P3 and the P4 garage. Normal shuttle bus service between long-term parking and the terminals will not be affected during the suspension.

The system is structurally safe but there have been dozens of spots, on the 6.3-mile running surface that consists of a welded steel grid and epoxy grout, that are showing signs of erosion.

"In some areas, there are potholes starting to form," Lawrence said. "They are small in some areas and larger in others."

In addition to direct shuttle bus service from Newark Penn Station, other ground transportation options at Newark Liberty International Airport include:

  • Bus service via NJ Transit Bus Lines go28, 37, 62, 67, and 107. Visit www.njtransit.com for more information.

Passengers who will be using the shuttle bus service are urged to allow for extra time and be prepared for possible delays.
