This week’s weather is a real downer but let’s hope we can get past it in the next couple of days and get ready for the unofficial start of summer with a nice Memorial Day weekend.  Anyway some Friday quick hitters:

  • Legalized sports betting in New Jersey is at least three weeks away as the state senate and assembly are scheduled to vote on legislation on June 7th and then it goes to Governor Murphy for his signature. Meanwhile there is speculation that Delaware could actually beat New Jersey to the punch and become the first state outside of Nevada with a full-scale sports gaming operation by the first week of June.
  • The local basketball community is coming together tomorrow to help an 18-month old boy whose father is basketball royalty at the Jersey Shore. Max Holden is going through treatment for a form of childhood cancer called neuroblastoma.  He has already undergone surgery and chemotherapy and his fight has inspired supporters to establish a non-profit called “Max Strong.”

Max’s father is Ranney School basketball coach Tahj Holden, a former standout at Red Bank and national champion at the University of Maryland.  Tomorrow there will be a charity alumni basketball game at Red Bank followed by a silent auction at Red Rock Tap and Grille in the town.  For details read the story at shoresportsnetwork.com

  • I have about 8-10 TV shows that I watch with regularity and was disappointed that one of them won’t be coming back next season. Or will it. I watched the final episode of “Designated Survivor” this week as ABC has cancelled the political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland because of low ratings.  There is talk that another network, maybe even Netflix could pick it up.
  • Being in radio I understand the value of repetition when it comes to commercials but Domino’s Pizza has pushed that a bit with a TV spot that promotes their carryout insurance. Seeing a tree fall on a car with snow all around was fine in February but it’s the middle of May so somebody needs to come up with a new angle in which the “actor” does not fall on the ice because there is none anywhere near a Domino’s.
