Belated congratulations to Lacey High School football coach Lou Vircillo, who finally collected his 264th career victory over the weekend when his Lions shutout Jackson Liberty.

That win allowed Vircillo to move past the late Vic Kubu into second place on the career wins list among Shore Conference coaches trailing only Warren Wolf who finished with 364.  In his 34th season as the only coach in school history, Vircillo had been stuck on 263 wins since October 11th of last season.

Following that victory the Lions had lost 11 straight games before Connor Davies threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to give the team a much-needed victory.  Vircillo is 264-124-3 in his illustrious coaching career which includes five seasons at Red Bank before starting the program at Lacey. The Lions will try and make it two straight when they visit Southern on Saturday.

The Toms River High School North Mariners Football Team and Cheer Squad will use Friday’s Homecoming Football Game against Brick to host the finale of their “Roll Out The Ribbons & Tackle Cancer” campaign.  There will be a donation table set up where you can donate a ribbon of honor for cancer awareness as well as purchase items like shirts and magnets.

At the same time the football team will be collecting non-perishable items as part of their annual food drive.  The game itself is an important one as visiting Brick can clinch at least a tie for the Class A South title while surprising Toms River North looks to continue its quest for a state playoff berth. The meeting is the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week and will be broadcast on the Shore Sports Network’s NewsTalk Radio WOBM 1160 & 1310AM and ShoreSportsNetwork.com.

I was saddened to learn about the passing of former Seaside Heights Mayor George Tompkins who died Sunday at the age of 86.  Tompkins served as mayor from 1975-1991 and later was a councilman in the borough.  For many years he owned Tompkins Bar and I always remember him for those Texas Bolo ties he used to wear. You didn’t see too many of those in Seaside Heights.

George is survived by his wife Millie, son Richard (a current councilman), daughter Lynn and three grandchildren.  Viewing will be today at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Seaside Park from 3-7pm. Tompkins’s successor as mayor in 1992 was Ken Hershey, who died in August.
