In March Alec Donovan of Brick Memorial capped his high school wrestling career by winning the 145-pound state championship and two months later he’s in the headlines for doing something that takes more guts and determination than what he did on the wrestling mat in Atlantic City.

Donovan has publicaly made it known that he is gay in a story that first appeared on outsports.com Monday, a story which he hopes will help other athletes like himself.   Donovan battled depression and even contemplated suicide before first admitting to some of his teammates last year that he was gay, an admission that resulted in acceptance and not rejection.

A senior who will graduate next month, Donovan made his sexual orientation known during a recruiting visit to Limestone College in South Carolina, one of several schools actively pursuing him for his wrestling talents.  Ironically when the story was published yesterday he was on a recruiting visit to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

It is believed Donovan will make his college choice in the next week or so and will become the first openly-gay wrestler in NCAA history.  There will be plenty of people rooting for him.

Brick Township High School will hold their 12th annual Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet tomorrow night at The Crystal Point in Point Pleasant with four new members joining an already illustrious group of accomplished athletes, educators, successful businessmen and more.

The newest class includes former Green Dragon football player and current Donovan Catholic head coach and youth mentor Dan Duddy, Linda Morrongiello-Hall, a former basketball standout and longtime teacher, Tom Luicci who for many years was an award-winning sportswriter for the Star-Ledger and is now the Senior Director for Digital Media at Rutgers and Don Reid, a former football standout and later longtime Green Dragons and Manasquan coach.

Will the third time be the charm for the Southern Regional Boys Lacrosse team?  The undefeated and top-seeded Rams face Rumson in this afternoon’s Shore Conference Tournament final at Monmouth University starting at 4 p.m. It’s the third straight year the two teams have met in the title game with Southern trying once again to become the first Ocean County team to win the event.

The Rams beat Rumson earlier in the season 16-14 and everyone expects a similar type game today.  With a team made up mostly of seniors, including Dylan Jinks who has more than 400 career points, this just might be the year the Rams break the Bulldogs grip on shore supremacy.
