Some random observations from my 2 days attending college graduation ceremonies and receptions over the weekend.

Some teachers form a special bond with students as mentor and that's a beautiful thing.   I heard from several students who said something like "if it weren't for (professor's name), I wouldn't be graduating or wouldn't be starting my career in (profession)."  It must be so rewarding for educators to see their students spread their wings and fly.

Speaking of professors, I was intrigued by what they wore at the ceremonies.  Apparently the robes are the school colors from where they got their PhDs.  And each comes with its own special hat (or tam).

Writing messages on mortarboards is a tradition I love.  I enjoyed reading messages like "Thanks Mom and Dad" and "She Designed A Life She Loved."   In the 80s, grads were using masking tape to make the letters.  Today's caps are rather artfully designed, with lots of sparkles.

It was clear that parents are a big part of the college experience.  Many grads had messages of thanks on the tops of their caps.  So to all of you who funded or helped fund your child's education, you are appreciated!  Congratulations to you and your graduate!
