The most serious charges against the Penn State fraternity brothers connected to the death of New Jersey's Timothy Piazza are dropped. A judge vacated counts of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault against eight defendants, and removed four from the case altogether. Fourteen remaining defendants are ordered to stand trial on lesser charges.

Rutgers athletes join the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Clothing collection bins will be placed at four entry gates, in time for tonight's game. Meanwhile, in Houston, the worst expectations of the aftermath are starting to take root as the death count surpasses 40. Since leaving Texas, the storm has crippled portions of western Louisiana, and sections of Alabama and Tennessee. Forecasters are tracking it toward Ohio before it winds down Saturday night.

Two Stafford Township businesses incur major damage, and police say they're familiar with the suspect. Pending the results of psychological and physical evaluations, Ernest Lathom of Oakhurst and, sometimes, Cedar Run, would face several charges for allegedly tossing a park bench through a convenience store glass door and burglarizing the shop, flinging boulders through a restaurant window, and then trying to light up the rear exterior wall with aprons and cooking grease.

Speaking and consulting fees, meals and gifts from drug companies to prescribers would be banned under a regulation proposed Thursday by Governor Christie in his continuing effort to clamp down on New Jersey's opiate dependency crisis. Monetary exchanges would have a $10,000 annual ceiling. A public hearing takes place October 19 in Newark.
