With three days until deadline, the 2018 state budget clears committees in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature. School aid reductions were downsized. About 67 percent of the originally-targeted districts, however, will still receive less assistance money from Trenton for at least the next five years.

Shore Congressmen Frank Pallone (D-6) and Frank LoBiondo (R-2) express optimism for New Jersey's bid to legalize sports betting, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to consider the case. They cite financial benefits for the state's casino and horse-breeding and -racing sectors, and job creation. New Jersey officials declined the opportunity offered by Congress to legalize it in 1992.

A former Buena Regional High School teacher will be sentenced in September for carrying on with a 17-year-old coed. William Jacobs pleaded guilty Monday to allegations that the pair had sexual relations for several months in late 2016 and early 2017. Prosecutors also contended that Jacobs urged the teen not to cooperate with investigators.
