Tragic news out of Belmar this morning as 12-year old Emily Gonzalez-Perez, on life support since being rescued from the water last Thursday has passed away just days after the death of her cousin Mitzi Hernandez.

Both girls were pulled under the water by a rip current on an unguarded beach in Belmar last week.

Pledges to a crowdfunding page for Hernandez's family eclipsed $40,000.00 for their expenses.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty added another $20,000.00 of proceeds towards the cause from his annual fundraising ball.

Horse racing may soon see another lap on the track...that is for people heading to the track.

Lawmakers in the state are looking into the idea of introducing 'Historial Horse Racing' at the tracks.

You would place a bet on a horse race that already happened, but you wouldn't know the horses names or when the race occurred.

Some observers in the industry feel it would be a good boost for an industry already struggling in New Jersey.

Whether you’re an athlete (former or current) or someone who just enjoys getting outside during the summer and playing a sport, it’s the perfect time of the year to get out there an have some fun.

There’s always a downer it seems in the midst of all the summertime fun, and that is the risk for injury.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Fox with The Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Toms River says if you haven’t played ball or run in while, warming up extensively and stretching will help cut your risk of injury as well.

“Many of the non-athletes are not tuned up and they get a lot of sprains and strains from not warming up and not being in shape,” said Fox

“If they’re tight and think they can just go out there and play tennis recreationaly and they haven’t picked up a racket in a year, they’re going to either hurt their shoulder or their elbow,” said Fox.
