SPRING LAKE — Never leave your keys in the car, no matter the make or model.

Case in point: The owners of a 2016 Porsche Panamera and a 2015 Maserati each left the keys inside their unlocked cars on Sunday morning in Spring Lake. And each car was stolen.

While values for particular models and features vary, Kelly Blue Book lists a 2016 Porsche Panamera at about $80,000, and a 2015 Maserati above $100,000.

Spring Lake Chief Ed Kerr took the occasion to issue a reminder that cars and homes should be locked up every time — even in the case of a car parked in one's driveway.

"While we live in a relatively safe community, criminals come to the area looking to take advantage of that. Leaving your keys in your car, or leaving the doors to your home unlocked, makes it easy for them to commit their crimes," Kerr said in a statement.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau the car stolen the most in New Jersey in 2016 was the 1996 Honda Accord, followed by the 2000 Honda Civic, 2006 full size Ford pickup, 2003 Dodge Caravan and 2015 Nissan Altima.
