Fireworks are as much a part of 4th of July as red, white and blue and certainly there will be several places where you can celebrate and close the holiday by watching a good fireworks show.

There was a time when many towns had some kind of fireworks display. There were so many at the same time that you could watch several simultaneously. However most of those have been eliminated as towns and local governments can no longer take on the financial obligation that goes with that.

However the tradition is very much alive in Beachwood where for the 75th year the celebration of America’s birthday will include an extravaganza over the Toms River shortly after 9pm on Saturday. It’s made possible due to sponsors, support from individuals and businesses, and guidance from borough officials. Word is that this year’s show will truly be THE most spectacular with larger shells used to light up the sky. It will clearly result in plenty of “oohs” and “ahs” and I’m sure the finale will wake up even the deepest sleeper.

What most don’t know is it takes a coordinated and combined effort to put on this annual show which WOBM has been proud to help sponsor for more than a decade. Various Beachwood officials, along with the help of the police and public works departments, fire and first aid squads all do their part and more to insure a smooth and safe event. Thousands of people will flock to Beachwood Beach and other areas along the Toms River, including surrounding towns like Toms River, South Toms River, Pine Beach and Ocean Gate. In addition hundreds of boats will find a place to drop anchor in the river and look up in the sky.

The only way this tradition has continued for 75 years is because of financial support with Comcast and WOBM leading the way. Among other businesses that assist are Connor Strong and Buckelew, T&M Associates, Hiering, Gannon and McKenna, New Vision Liquor/Spirits Unlimited, Suplee, Clooney & Company and JCP&L.

However what’s just as important is donations made by the public and as we always sa, .if everyone who watches the fireworks donated just $1.00 the show could go on for another 75 years. With that said if watching the fireworks in Beachwood is part of your holiday plans then please send any donation you can to Beachwood Fireworks on the River, 1600 Pinewald Road, Beachwood, NJ 08722.
