2nd suspect arrested in fatal shooting of Rutgers-Newark student

NEWARK — A second suspect wanted in the murder of a Toms River student at Rutgers-Newark has been arrested nearly 10 months later.

Fraynned Ramirez, 26, of Hartford, Connecticut, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. He had been wanted for the murder of Shani Patel who was killed in April 2016  in his off-campus apartment on Central Avenue in Newark.

A second suspect, Marcus Feliz, 25, of Newark, was arrested shortly after the shooting. He pleaded not guilty during a court hearing after his arrest.

Neither Feliz nor Ramirez were affiliated with Rutgers.

Patel's slaying was one of two killings of college students in Newark last year. NJIT student Joseph Micalizzi, 23, of Freehold, was killed in May during a robbery at his frat house. Two men have been indicted in Micalizzi's murder. 

In the April shooting, Patel's roommate was injured. NJ Advance Media citied sources close to the investigation saying a substantial amount of drugs and money were found at the intersection of Central Avenue and Halsey Street, and that the incident may have been a drug-related robbery.

Patel was a 2012 graduate of Toms River High School North.
